Yup. That's a bolo tie. Granted, I'm easing my way into this, tucking the leather strings (ties?) inside my sweatshirt. But still, wearing this thing made me feel like a brave cowgirl. In fact, every time I looked in the mirror I got this song in my head. Wild west, the 80s, and Bon Jovi, all in one little accessory so neatly tucked into my otherwise unassuming outfit. What's not to love?

Here's the details...

This particular one was lovingly selected by mom for her own personal use approximately 30 years ago, but there are still plenty of bolo ties out there, available for purchase. Did you know it's the official state neckwear for Arizona, New Mexico and Texas? Did you even know there was such a thing as official state neckwear? Oh the things you will learn with me...
Speaking of birds and trying new things and seeing them through... I have also vowed this year to make more things. I am throwing myself whole-heartedly into makerdom. So far I have made a patchwork cushion, a fleece coat for my pooch, and this little fatty. I have no idea what he's destined for, but for now, he's just being a bird. Pretty appropriate don't you think? (I swear, I hadn't even seen the video when I made this!)

If you want to try your hand at this but have never attempted such a thing, have no fear. I had no idea what I was doing either. Get yourself a hoop, some embroidery floss and a needle, and google something like "blue bird" (yes, that is literally what I did). Find an image you like or if you are feeling wild go from your imagination, sketch it out on your fabric and dive right in! If you need a little extra boost, I wholeheartedly recommend these resources:

Craftsy's hand embroidery class - very basic, but a quick and easy watch. I learned a great tip for threading multi-strand floss and some solid beginner stitches. Which, really, is all you need.

Trish Burr's digital class on needle painting - a great tutorial for the long & short stitch worked in multiple colors.

Mary Corbet's Needle 'N Thread blog - an amazing resource for different stitches, materials and there are some tutorials as well. Plus, this one's free.

Hey, I said be fearless, try something new, and just dive in. But I didn't say you couldn't have any help!

Trying your hand at anything new lately? Tell me all about it.

you're kind of kicking my ass here. I generally don't share a lot of personal stuff on this blog, which is partly why it's been so damned quiet lately, and I'm going to keep it that way (though I will admit it is a weird grey area, to so carefully curate the image of your life, either intentionally or unintentionally, leading readers to believe all is perfect, when I can pretty much guarantee you for any and all of the bloggers you read, it's not). But in spite of that crazy run-on sentence let me just say that 2014 finished on a super high note for me and then 2015 came around and smacked me down. But that's ok 2015, like 2Pac says, I ain't mad at cha. And I have total faith that you have something awesome in store for me just around the corner. Cause you do, right?

Meanwhile, I'm going to bust out some new personal mottos for the year.

Read on if you're curious...

1. Be a fucking bird. I know, this makes no sense to you right now, but bear with me. This is actually some deeply profound and zen advice imparted by a meathead body builder with a youtube channel. Check it out below, and please do yourself a favor and just fast forward to minute 3:52.

Pretty good, am I right? (Sometimes you find inspiration in the most surprising places.) So, be like the bird, sing your song, and don't give a fuck.

2. Better finished than perfect. This is a big one for me. I am a true perfectionist and it has both made me very good at many things and simultaneously blocked me from really seeing anything through to it full potential. So I'm done with it. I am finishing things. (Yes, including not finishing. See what I did there? So meta.) And hand in hand with that, I'm taking more risks, doing things that are slightly scary, because the reality is, these things have no actual risk involved, just the unknown. Which is what we live every single day anyway, so we might as well embrace it.
3. Be here now. Here, listen to the soulful Ray LaMontagne sing about it while I ramble:

Yes, mindfulness lessons abound in my life right now. I've been meditating a lot (thank you Headspace!) and reading good books on the subject as well (if you haven't read 10% Happier yet, do it now!) and I can, without a doubt, say that it is improving my quality of life and my coping mechanisms exponentially. So in 2015, let's try not to get caught up in cyclical thinking, in stressing about the past or the future, let's just remember that this is it, this is life, this is what we get, this, right here, right now. And overall? It is pretty damn awesome. I for one, feel truly grateful.

And that is why, dearest 2015, I am so sure that you have something up your sleeve, some awesome twist that is going to make me explode with joy. I can't wait. In the meantime, I'll be here, now, taking risks, seeing things through, and singing my fucking bird song.

Hi there. Me again. Going back to my roots. By which I mean, I should probably hit the salon for a touch-up on the bleach front, but I'm refusing to do so. Partly because I don't feel like sitting there for hours while the chemicals burn into my scalp, but partly because, well, I kind of love my roots. Am I crazy? I feel a little bit Debbie Harry, a little bit Blonde Ambition. I know, I look nothing like Madonna, and I most certainly am not a rock star. But feeling like one occasionally is not such a bad thing, is it?

Excuse me while I indulge myself and show off my roots...

Just to set the record straight, there is no shortage of t-shirts in my closet. But graphic tees? That's another matter. I'm craving something slouchy and neutral (read: grey) with a unique and smart graphic printed on it. So I scoured the web and found some that feel super personal, without me actually having to learn how to silk screen. Plus, as a bonus, rather than buying from a superstore, you're supporting small businesses. Like Zip-Dang in my hometown, responsible for the Great Lakes t-shirt above.
1. What self-respecting nerdball doesn't enjoy a healthy dose of NPR podcasts now and then? Fresh Air, All Songs Considered, Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me! are all regular listens for me. I should probably have the t-shirt to go with them, don't you think?

2. Love this Cinderella's Boxing tee from Arquebus Clothing (though the nerdball in me does wonder about that apostrophe). In small print it says "Underdogs fight tough". Mostly I just love the victorian ladies duking it out.

3. Even though at this point I've spent more years in Madrid than anywhere else in my life, Wisconsin will always be my #1 home. Which means this tee is a must. And if you're not from Wisconsin (which I'm guessing you're probably not), these guys have you covered regardless of your home state. International readers, sorry, you'll just have to make your own!

4. This t-shirt is just too hilarious to pass up. And I love that it's made in-house by a small t-shirt company in San Francisco.

5. That same San Francisco t-shirt company, Buy Me Brunch, is responsible for this awesome drapey scoop-neck.

6. I couldn't resist adding this to the list. I've been wanting one of these super cheesy animal print t-shirts for ages but am just too sheepish (ha ha) to pull the trigger. I've seen these in person, they are too boxy and stiff, but a pair of scissors and this softening trick might just work their magic and transform this into the best t-shirt ever.

7. Another good one from Arquebus Clothing, but it comes with another grammar issue. They're calling it the Calvary T-shirt, but I'm pretty sure they mean cavalry. Spell check anyone? Still, the word's not on the t-shirt and I love the image.

8. This is another one at the top of my list because This American Life is the best podcast/radio show ever. Seriously. If you don't listen to it regularly, start now, it is just so damn good. And I can't believe I haven't bought myself one of these t-shirts yet.

Do you do graphic tees? Where do you get yours? Are they charged with sentimental meaning or are they just the freebies from some pharmaceutical company your uncle works for?

Hi,

I can't believe it was only yesterday. You're not the sort of dress I'm usually attracted to but I knew from the first moment there was something special between us. I'm not even sure if you're a nightgown or an actual dress, but let's not confuse emotions with labels. I grabbed you immediately and took you to a private space where we could get to know each other better. You slipped on so easily and made me feel carefree and adventurous and cool. Your pseudo-hippie imitation-Morocco vibe contrasted so weirdly with my platinum hair and red lipstick it was like we completed each other. My heart started palpitating; my excitement mounted. But then I noticed that itch. Why were you so rough with me? And for that matter, why did you feel so... icky? I was compelled to check your label, where I saw that while your soul is made of linen and gauzy cotton, they got it wrong in the factory and made you of 100% polyester. They destroyed your essence. I'm sorry, but it was a deal breaker for me. I put you back on the rack and cried a little tear for what could have been. I'm sure someone less sensitive will pick you up and you will have a fin time with her. I wish you the best.

It's getting warmer and warmer, time to switch out the winter sweaters, coats, and boots for tank tops, linen t-shirts, and sandals. I love that. Also time to bust out the summer pajamas, or treat yourself to a new little nightie. I'm craving something light and airy and white with a touch of embroidery. Like these little beauties from Zara Home. That's right folks, Zara Home. Did you even know they did lounge clothes? Well they do, and they do them damn well.
What. I'm sorry, are you the boots I didn't even know I needed but now I can think of nothing else? Yeah, I thought so. A true hybrid, these little ankle booties are part western, part victorian lace-up, part moto, part dessert, part dainty and part bad-ass. The Esquina booties from Freebird by Steven. Have I been under a rock that I'd never heard of this Freebird line before? Some really good stuff here. Oh, and these come in distressed bleach-splattered black too...
Looks like they're selling out fast though, so if you're interested you'd better hurry. The black ones are on sale over at Revolve, only one left in - would you look at that - in my size! But my heart really belongs to those taupe bad boys. Knowing me I'm just going to sit on my butt and fantasize about them til they're sold out, but wouldn't it be nice if I actually took the plunge? I can just picture wearing them every single day... sigh...Nomadic D.http://www.blogger.com/profile/06303665587576888183noreply@blogger.com35tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8983416889703222776.post-79409943969692757512014-04-03T10:40:00.000+02:002014-04-03T10:40:35.575+02:00goat & gramp

I mentioned the other day that much of my recent absence has been due to a soon-to-be-unveiled project I've been working on... Well, ta-daa! Welcome to the unveiling! I present to you: Goat & Gramp. You guys are some of the first to see the beloved beast that has been eating all my time of late, a project very close to my heart because, well, it's all about shopping. Not the kind of fast-paced gimme-now shopping that we so often succumb to for a quick fix (no judgement here, we all need instant gratification once in a while), but the slower, more thoughtful treasure-hunting kind, where you carefully seek out just the right piece for you and take the time to get to know the process and the people behind its creation. This can sometimes get lost in our fast-paced world, and in the vast sea of information that is today's internet, it can be hard to connect with the smaller companies that are run by the makers themselves.

More on Goat & Gramp...

For a while now I've included profiles of some of these thoughtful designers on the blog, but I realized that the scope of what I wanted was much larger: an easily navigable, highly visual, content-rich site that indexes small businesses that share similar values and aesthetics. I couldn't find anything out there that fit the bill, so I made it myself! Yeah, I'm pretty excited about it, I'm guessing you can tell. But just look at some of this stuff:

While you don't actually buy any of the goods directly through us, it should be pretty easy to find something you're attracted to and pop over to their shop to purchase directly from the makers themselves. For more information, see our About page, check our FAQ section, or browse around through the different navigation options. You can search via traditional categories (like women's clothing, men's accessories, or home goods), or you can search by material (if you want to check out folks who work with, say, leather, canvas, or recycled materials). We also have a section organized geographically in case you want to find something made locally in a specific area. Or, head straight to the What's New page for a random sampling of the latest additions.

I trust you'll all forgive the temporary posting inconsistency here on the blog and the occasional self-promotion I will not be able to avoid with regards to the new site. I'm just so damned excited about it, it's hard to contain myself!

The site is a work in progress, constantly growing and changing as we
add more content and hear back from our growing community of both makers
and shoppers. That means you too! So if you take a moment to head over and check it out, I'd love to hear from you, either
here at the blog or over at Goat & Gramp. I swear it, I am still alive. I'm super busy working on a project that I hope to be sharing with you guys soon (so excited!), and I can only spend so many hours in front of the computer before my eyeballs start bleeding, so the blog has taken a bit of a back seat lately. But I am alive and well, truly. And if you need proof, follow me on Instagram, where I have finally set up an account and am chronicling life's little pleasures in a less wordy way.

Isn't that lovely? It's from Valerie June, off her new album Pushin' Against a Stone, and I can't stop listening to it. The album as a whole is pretty eclectic, running from blues to pop to early country to r&b and back over to the Appalachian mountains, but her beautiful, strange, old time-y voice has me totally hooked.

The other day I mentioned I'm on a bit of a health kick; that includes good exercise, good eating, and also, a little bit of detoxifying life in general. You know, all those sneaky toxins that you never really pay any attention to, like the ones in cleaning products, nail polish, and yes, deodorant. It's actually a little scary once you start looking into it.

What to do about it...

You could go au natural, but who wants to be stinky? Not me. You could try that crystal rock stuff, but I suspect the people who swear by it are delicate sweaters. Which I am not, especially when I'm working out daily. You could run to your local drugstore and pick up a cheap fix like Arm & Hammer Essentials Natural Deodorant, which sounds good enough. But beware: it's actually loaded up with highly toxic triclosan. (I told you they were sneaky!)

So what to do? Try this stuff. It actually works, and it smells amazing. The Vanilla Lavender that I'm using now smells like fresh laundry. The Pure Vanilla I tried before this smelled like fresh cupcakes, which I also really liked. They have other scents as well but they were a little fruity, which I think is a bad idea for armpits, but that's just my own personal preference.

"But does it really work?" you want to know. Yes, I swear, it really does. You do have to shower every day, this is no 48-hour camping protection here. And if you go to a super crowded concert in a teeny tiny venue and it gets as hot and humid as Hawaii in July, you may wish you'd gone for the big guns. But for daily use, I absolutely love it.

I used to just shrug my shoulders at this sort of stuff and slather on the chemicals, but lately I think it's more and more important to be conscious of what goes on (and into) our bodies. What's your feeling about all this?Nomadic D.http://www.blogger.com/profile/06303665587576888183noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8983416889703222776.post-56830185144607126432014-02-04T10:52:00.000+01:002014-02-04T10:52:07.448+01:00lunar elements

In the last few months of 2013, fitness had sort of fallen away as a priority for me. And that would be ok (I don't mind being a wee bit softer and rounder for a time) except that not exercising actually makes me anxious. And that's not ok. So in this wonderful new year, I'm trying to find ways to fit fitness (ha ha) into my new routines and habits. This means cutting back a bit from where I used to be, but I'm realizing, it doesn't have to be so all or nothing. I can just do a little bit, every day; it's all about balance.

Here's what I'm doing...

P90X3. Yeah baby. Totally cheesy? Uh huh. Good despite that? You betcha. And it's just half an hour, which is what really won me over.

But, and this is important if you're going to be doing any kind of cross training or HIIT stuff, do not do it in your running shoes. I tried it with mine, and after a few days of jumping around in them my hips hurt, my knees hurt, my ankles hurt, and at some point I was even convinced I'd broken some little bone in my foot.

(This is the part where I get to shop, in the guise of bettering myself.)

I did some research and found these beauties (on sale!) which are built sort of like the Nike Free, but with added lateral movement support as well, and I swear, all my aches and pains are gone! The idea is that the Lunar Elements (not gonna lie, I love that name) allow your foot to move as it would if you were barefoot, while still giving some shock absorption and support.

Look how much they bend! I tell you, I am in love with these. They are bringing me joy like I never anticipated. So, to those of you who have more variety in your exercise routine than just forward motion, I highly recommend them.

Happy New Year everyone! Yes, I am about a month late to the party, but honestly, this little internet hiatus I've taken has been so wonderful. In this hyper-connected world we live in, I feel like sometimes that's just what we need in order to breathe a little, grow a little, change a little...

And speaking of change... I was threatening to do this before the holidays and I bet you didn't think I'd actually do it. Hell, I didn't think I'd actually do it. But now that I'm living in Blonde Town, I have to say, I love it here and I think I'm going to stay a while.

If ever anything warranted an onslaught of selfies I think it's this...

Before the roots grew in it was all just a little too elfish and my own reflection startled me in the mirror, but now that it's grown out a bit and I've had some time to get used to it, I absolutely love it. I feel like a rock star, a mother of dragons, and, oddly enough, very much like myself. I'm planning on going lighter, but this was all done in one marathon session and was as pale as we could get it without major damage. Next time I go in we'll see if we can reach platinum.

So, yeah, I'd say it's a new year.

ps- That's the Everlane sweatshirt I'm wearing, another recent acquisition. In love with that too. What can I say, it's a love-filled year.

Ah, layers. I grew up in Wisconsin so I like to think of myself as something of a layering expert. In my early days I used to take it to extremes - in college I would often layer flannel pajamas under wool skirts to keep warm in the winter. I'd like to think my layering habits have matured a bit since then (I really make an effort not to wear my pjs out of the house now), but I still rely heavily on the basic techniques. And one thing that I've learned is to embrace the layer, rather than hide it.

So here I am, with my wool trousers worn over some cashmere and silk blend leggings, draped over the tops of my boots rather than tucked in. I sort of like this backwards sock effect. Sort of Dickensian, no? Not something I usually look for in my styling, but I think it works here, so I'm going to go with it. All winter long.

Been a while since I've posted, please excuse my absence. I'm trying to focus my energy a little bit more and be a little bit more productive with my time. Plus, sometimes you just need a break, you know?

Productivity, however, has been seriously thwarted by a major distraction this week though: Emily Weiss and her newly platinum blonde hair.

Obsess with me...

She was a brunette just a little while ago, a solid been-one-for-years-probably-always-will-be brunette, at least in my eyes. Nothing wrong with that. She's lovely, really. Remember?

And now look!

It totally works, am I right? She looks amazing. And thus began my obsession. I want to go blonde now too. Ok, so it'll probably take hundreds of dollars and multiple many-hour sessions, and then I'll be a slave to my roots, and it'll get fried and frizzy... I know. I know! But still, I want.
I have always been anti-extraneous-fuzz in my clothing. Mohair and angora items made me sneeze just at the thought of all those flyaway fibers getting near my nose, not to mention in my mouth. But the other day, at Cos, I was overcome by a sense of adventure and bravery (possibly brought on by having my favorite shopping companion at my side - a rare treat!) and wrapped myself in this angora cardigan.
I see no reason not to shout this from the highest mountain tops: It's my birthday tomorrow!

I have no big plans, I think this year I will be snuggled up with Husband eating all sorts of decadent things and watching movies or something of the sort. But sometimes quiet cozy celebrations are the best kind.

I do have a few birthday wishes, but like one does with all the best ones, I'm going to keep them to myself so that they come true. If and when they do, I will let you know.

In the meantime, dear reader, go and eat a piece of cake on my behalf. File these shoes under Will Never Be Mine. First, because they're for men. I have a new little purse, unlike any other purse I've had before. I suppose you could call it a clutch, which is what they're calling it over at Zara, but it's pretty big for a clutch, and it also comes with a perfect little shoulder strap. So it's a purse. That you can clutch. It's some magical size that works both in hand and on shoulder, and I'm totally enchanted.
I've never been much of a clutch gal, but after picking up this little guy last winter I've seen how useful they are when you're just running out the door and only need a few things. But this, this fabulous hybrid, this is going to change the way I do things for sure.
My favorite part is that it has these two separate compartments inside, one zippered and one magnet-snapped, to keep things flat and organized. There's another little interior pocket as well. I've always been partial to big bags; I like the security of carrying my entire life around on my back. But maybe it's time to take some of that weight off my shoulders and lighten up, literally and figuratively. Much to my surprise, this little purse holds all my essentials and then some
Perfect, right? Vaguely reminds me of the Celine Trio, but not enough to feel like a real knock-off, just more in terms of functionality. Oh and yeah, I know, my phone's busted. But until it actually coughs its little death rattle I'm going to hang on to it. And maybe graduate to an iphone and join the rest of the modern population. Oh, you're reversible? Get into my closet now.

The details...

Last year Uniqlo announced a new designer collaboration with Comptoir des Cottoniers, and they released the first collection of Madamoiselle Plume, tagline "When French fashion meets Japanese technology". It was very similar to Uniqlo's famous Ultra Light Down Compact Jacket but reversible, zippered, and with a (faux) leather trim, and exclusive color ways. Sold like hotcakes.

Well, Madamoiselle Plume is back, more quietly this year, and with no outward recognition of the fact that it's produced by Uniqlo (though it is, I promise, and I've had this confirmed in store just to be sure), with new colors and patterns to make your heart pitter patter. My absolute favorite is that black and blue print above, which looks to me like some magical leopard-ikat hybrid, but it also comes in a grey on black version of the same print as well as a solid red, blue, pale grey and slate grey (all reversible to black).

Pretty damn cute, right? Of course, you could spend a whole lot less and go with an original Uniqlo.:
If I had one near me to get the sizing right you can be sure I'd own a bunch of these by now. But for now, I'm drooling over the frenchified version.
Do you have one of these ultra light down jackets or vests? Would you spring for a fancier version? You all know I have a real soft spot for Cos, the more minimalist, higher quality sister line to H&M. It's my go-to spot for most of my basics, and then some, and I'm especially enamored of their tailored wool pants and sweaters. And their t-shirts. And button-downs. And purses. Ok, fine, I get a lot of stuff there.
The thing is, until now, there's been no access to Cos in the U.S., a fact that saddens me deeply both on behalf of my readers located there, and also on behalf of myself, for when I move back. Be sad no more! Cos is moving stateside!
They're going to be opening a brick and mortar store in New York, in a haunted building in SoHo, as well as launching an e-commerce site. In the spring of 2014. But if you find that you just can't wait that long, you're in luck: Opening Ceremony will be carrying a selection of their goods both online and in a pop-up inside their nyc store. It all launches friday, so if you're in the U.S., get ready!
I have discovered the easiest, most fool-proof, flattering, fabulous and quick way to a smoky eye. Easy, foolproof and quick because it's just two beautifully formulated products (3 if you count the brush), fabulous and flattering because of the magical color. It might sound like I'm exaggerating a bit, but honestly, I've become addicted to this as my new lightening quick makeup routine.

Check it out...

See that color? I don't know if there's a word to describe it. Clinique calls it 'Egyptian' (not even close to being a color name) and Make Up For Ever calls it 'Bronze' (which is at least a color, but not the right one, and pretty unimaginative if you ask me). I would say it's a deep dark slate khaki with miniscule flecks of gold in it for added depth and dimension. Like glamorous army camouflage. Or an oil slick. None of which sounds very desirable, I get that. But just look at it! Trust me when I say this is the perfect smoky eye color. It has a softness you would never get from black, and a certain warmth that greys would never provide, but it doesn't really read as any sort of specific color once it's on. Just smudgy smoky goodness. It works magic against my pale skin, and I think it makes my hazel eyes look a little more honey, but I can imagine how glorious it would look on darker skin tones as well.

Here's how you do it:

1 / 2 / 3

Use Clinique Cream Shaper for Eyes in Egyptian, liberally and messily, on your waterline, in the roots of your lashes, and then from there take it out as big as you want. I usually just add a bit to the outer third of my upper lid. Be reckless and careless. Smudge with your finger. Then to deepen and soften the effect (simultaneously! Pretty neat, huh?), use a small eyeshadow brush like the #23 from Sephora (currently on sale!) with the Make Up Forever Eyeshadow in Bronze 84, and go over the edges, blending out and expanding as much as you dare. I tend to go pretty easy on the liner and a little more heavy-handed with the shadow; it gives me that desirable slept-in look pretty effortlessly without looking overly heavy or dark.

It literally takes 2 minutes. And I never look like I've been beaten up, or worse, dead for days, which has happened to me with bluer, blacker, or greyer shades of smoke. Khaki oil slick perfection. Try it, I bet it will rock your world.

I'm loving this campaign from Argentinian knitwear label Nido for their spring/summer 2014 collection (found via Miss Moss). It's a great example of thoughtful branding and marketing. Not that I don't love what they do and what they stand for: hand-knit goods produced locally in Buenos Aires in small batches from Argentinian sheep's wool. What's not to love about that? But it is true that the individual pieces they produce are quite simple, and without the sweet story they're selling, they might just go unnoticed.

And that would be a great shame. Things like branding and marketing have been on my mind for a while now, and I love to find examples where it's done tastefully and successfully without feeling manipulative in any way. Nido nails it. I'm more than happy to lap up the story they're telling; it does nothing but make me feel good. And want to bundle up in a cozy lightweight sweater while I'm at it.
