xenotes

Starting to plan our trip to Mexico in May and I'm getting all excited just thinking about everything I want to pack into such a short time.  At the top of my list: cenotes.  They're basically natural sinkholes caused by the collapse of limestone bedrock, revealing wells of fresh groundwater, and are often connected to one another by seemingly endless tunnels.  Underwater underground labyrinths.  So cool, right?  One of the natural wonders of the world (at least, they would be if I were in charge of making the list).

More exciting and inspiring photos...

I don't know if I'd be brave enough to go diving in them (no, actually, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't) but swimming and snorkling for sure.  I can't wait.

Have you ever been to a cenote?  Any other vacation tips for the Riviera Maya?

  1. Looks amazing! Enjoy your trip! (Snorkeling is fun if you're not ready to commit to full-on diving.)

    1. Full-on diving I think is pretty much out of the question. I saw The Abyss as a young kid and it's really stuck with me. Ha! Definitely going snorkeling though.

  2. Wow, that looks amazing. I wonder how deep it is and then I saw the rest of the pics, wohhhhh. That is really cool place to go check out. Snorkeling is fun but if you get a chance to learn Scuba do it, it's a blast.
