ankle layers

Ah, layers.  I grew up in Wisconsin so I like to think of myself as something of a layering expert.  In my early days I used to take it to extremes - in college I would often layer flannel pajamas under wool skirts to keep warm in the winter.  I'd like to think my layering habits have matured a bit since then (I really make an effort not to wear my pjs out of the house now), but I still rely heavily on the basic techniques.  And one thing that I've learned is to embrace the layer, rather than hide it.

So here I am, with my wool trousers worn over some cashmere and silk blend leggings, draped over the tops of my boots rather than tucked in.  I sort of like this backwards sock effect.  Sort of Dickensian, no?  Not something I usually look for in my styling, but I think it works here, so I'm going to go with it.  All winter long.

Do it yourself...

All these pieces are no longer available (read: old) but you can always find similar items, like these:

  2. This looks awesome. I've never thought to layer like this before but it really works. I hate layering which sucks because I live in Switzerland and it's freaking freezing. I'm still refusing to wear socks so I'm pretty much freezing whenever I leave the house. Uhhhh. Need to sort my life out. xx

    1. I cannot believe you are bare-ankled in the middle of winter, in Switzerland! You are nuts. I'm sure it's much warmer here and I had to start covering my ankles a month ago! But then, I'm actually a big wuss when it comes to cold. People think if you're from a cold climate you're naturally impervious, but the truth is, we just know how to bundle up and layer to combat it! Put some socks on girl!

    1. Thanks! My trousers are from Cos from last year, but they often do similar ones I think. The boots are super old, but still holding up well ;)

  4. I think your layering certainly has the edge over mine (furry lined tights) under some jeans. And the boots are gorgeous especially with the hook fastening at the top. It reminds me of a pair I had when I was younger, almost a bit Victorian Urchin. Makes me wonder where my pair went ...

    1. Totally Victorian Urchin! You are so right. I actually did this pretty much every day over my vacation, it was the only way I could stay warm enough! Now go find your boots...

    1. Thanks! I've been curious about Grenson shoes for a while now. I have a few pairs of Churchs and they're holding up so well over the years, and I think of Grenson as being of a similar quality.

  10. Hi there just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your post seem to be running off the screen in Internet explorer. I'm not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I figured I'd post to let you know. The layout look great though! Hope you get the problem solved soon. Many thanks
