diy jewelry frame

I've had a jewelry storage issue for a long time now.  I've tried boxes and baskets and bags and cute little porcelain dishes.  I've researched all sorts of earring trees and racks online.  Nothing seemed quite right.  I wanted a way to keep things neatly organized, but still somehow on display.  If you don't have a good way to see your collection, you're never going to wear half of it.  Out of sight, out of mind.

After years of messy ineffective dust-collecting solutions, I finally got fed up and decided to take matters into my own hands.

I found this beautiful old wooden frame at the rastro (the flea market here in Madrid).  I actually had it set up, empty, on my dresser for months, and loved it even just like that, but I knew it was destined for greater things.

My original idea was to back it with fabric or string ribbons across it, but thank god for taking time to actually think about things, because I think that would have been a one way ticket to ineffective tacky-land.  Instead I got myself some brass chain and some thin ribbon in lots of different colors.

In the end I went with just three colors.

The next step was to thread the ribbon through the chain, a la Chanel.  I put a few stitches in either end of the finished threaded chains, just to keep the ribbon from sliding around or twisting.

Then I put a few nails on the back of the frame, slipped the ends of the chains right over the nail heads, and voila!  The perfect earring display!

What works so well about the chain, even with the ribbon threaded through it, is that it's so easy to hook the earrings right into the individual links, and that way they don't slide around and the chain doesn't sag too much.

I draped my watches and some bracelets over the top, which seems to work fine for now.  I'm still going to have to find a solution for my closed bangle-type bracelets, not to mention all my necklaces and rings, but for now I'm just happy these guys have found a home.  And a pretty nice home at that, if I do say so myself.

  3. Super clever. Much more user-friendly than the one I payed through the nose for, where you really have to work to get the earrings on. And the frame is beautiful.

  10. Woah! I'm really enjoying the template/theme of this website. It's simple, yet effective. A lot of times it's tough to get that "perfect balance" between user friendliness and visual appearance. I must say you've done a very good job with this. Additionally, the blog loads super quick for me on Safari. Superb Blog!sem services
