amulets

Been thinking about superstitions and lucky charms lately...

This golden apple was given to me when I was born and I'm convinced it has magical powers.  I wear it for general good luck, and I never get on a plane without it.  The blue eye bead speaks for itself: must have one on at all times.  Usually the one on my keychain is enough to keep my feeling safe, but sometimes you just want a little extra.

In general though, I don't consider myself a superstitious person.  Apart from the lucky charms and the occasional knocking on wood that is.

How about you?  Do you have amulets or charms that you cling to?  Or lucky red cowboy boots?  Superman socks?  Or are you too rational and logical to be bothered with any of that?

  1. I'm probably a little too rational as I don't like to have my life in the hands of a little charm or something and then to find that I've lost it which would probably be the case as I can be rather slapdash about jewellery (even the expensive stuff). I've only just found my wedding diamond studs after realising that I hadn't seen them for a number of years. But your little apple one is rather charming - I like that very much.

I do however have a Turkish evil eye necklace which was given to my husband when he was rather generous paying for his shoes to be shined at the hotel we were staying and the man hunted us down the next day to give us the necklace. 12 years later, we still have it hanging on a door - maybe I do believe after all?

    1. Ah HA! I'm telling you, the blue eye bead (or evil eye) is something everyone should have. We have a huge glass one on our front door as well. Did you know that supposedly if they shatter it's because they have protected you from great harm? Just so you know if yours eventually breaks...

Really, this is my only big superstition. But it's such a good one and I enjoy it so much...

  2. I'm both superstitious and not at all - I will get a hangup on a charm and wear it every day for months, and then grow tired of it and start wearing something else that I completely obsess over. I don't think it is as much superstition as an urge to have a "signature piece", though. My longest runner is my silver bird skull, I think I wore it nearly every day for something like two years.

I do wear the same rings all the time though, and I think my new silver bracelet (the one The Boyfriend bought me in New York) will be a true keeper. It hasn't left my wrist since I first put it on :)

    1. Silver bird skull sounds so creepy/lovely! I totally hear you about the need for a signature piece, and agree that it is different from being superstitious. My apple was just that for the longest time, but now I'm developed some weird thing about plan travel and I have to have my apple when I fly. It is nice though when you get addicted to a piece like you have with your new bracelet, it starts really feeling like a part of you instead of just an external adornment.

  3. I'm not superstitious mostly but I do have some evil eyes - bracelets and just some charms hanging around the apartment! Really just love the design and of course when I was in Europe they were available for cheap, in abundance, just can't help myself! Love the little delicate one on the picture.

    1. Thank you! I actually bought a whole bag of those little ones the last time I was in Turkey, and aside from the one on my keychain and the one I wear on a chain when I need a little extra luck, I've also been known to safety pin them to the inside of my clothes for special occasions. Like I said, it's my one big superstition, so I might as well go big with it!

  4. I'm the same, not usually, but I recently started wearing a necklace my sister and dad got me as everyday piece. Also, I started wearing a ring that was passed down from my great grandmother's mother. Not so much for luck but for a sense of protection and reminder of how enmeshed we are in family and friendship relations that we all too often take for granted.

The evil eye is a nice touch to the charm, really love the way you wear yours.

    1. That's so sweet, I love the idea of the jewelry reminding you of the importance of family and friendships. I think when certain pieces become more like touchstones that mere adornments it's almost magical.
