semana santa

This lovely lady stopped in front of my door today.  Literally.  And another lovely lady came out on a balcony above us and sang to her.   I'm not a religious person, but even so, I find semana santa in spain to be incredibly moving and powerful.  And aside from the emotional impact it's also just visually stunning.

more after the jump...

This year the heavy rains stopped a lot of the processions, we saw grown men sobbing when they realized they wouldn't be able to do the honors.  Apparently this is the first time in 80 years that this has happened.  I wish I could show you videos of some of the footage we've seen on the news, it gave me goosebumps, but I can't seem to find any online.  Here are some photos though.  If you're not familiar with spanish semana santa, let me warn you that you might find some of the images shocking and even frightening; in the states the same images have very different connotations.  Rest assured these are not racist extremist groups, just traditional spanish catholics celebrating easter week.
