birthday suit

My birthday's coming up this week and I think maybe I need to get myself a present.  Like a nice boxy masculine coat.  Tried this one on at Zara yesterday and left totally smitten but also mildly confused.  Unbuttoned it looks stunning, so cool I almost can't even stand myself in it (though the buttons may need changing - a wee bit too shiny for my taste - but that's an easy fix).  Close it up and it goes kind of wonky.  Too much room on top with nothing to anchor it, and then very fitted across my (somewhat ample) derriere. It's ok, but not perfect.  But then, I could just wear it unbuttoned all the time, right?

I can't stop thinking about it.  I may be in love.  And I think maybe it's ok for a birthday purchase to not be the most practical item in the world, no?  What would you do?

  1. I love this coat! I think with Zara clothes, it's a case of not looking too closely. But I really like the tailored and slightly masculine style which I'm sure will last season after season.

    1. Agreed. With Zara there's always a few giveaway details that if you look too closely let you know you got a lower-end version. But sometimes that's all you need, and like you say, the style is just so good on this piece.

  2. i think this jacket was designed to look cool in a certain way, without much thought for anything else - like whether it also looks good buttoned. like everything at Zara, it's about the look!

about 80% of everything i've bought there since 2008 and 2009 has fallen in part in some way so i avoid buying anything there that's too big of an investment...

    1. Yeah, I hear you. I can't stop myself from buying Zara but I definitely don't have the highest expectations for lifespan from their garments. I find that they usually have a lifespan of 3 years or so. Sometimes that's good enough for me, and sometimes I'm looking for a little longevity. This coat would be more of an impetuous seduction situation rather than a long-term monogamous relationship.

  3. Its a lovely jacket - I saw it today in Zara as I walked in and almost, just almost picked it up and then realised it wasn't going to work on me being such a short bum. The buttons are positioned so it wouldn't fasten where you need them to hold the jacket together but if you can live with the jacket being open all the time, I'd get it (if it fitted me). It is a lovely looking jacket.

By the way, do you write the Dragons Palate blog as well? Are you another foodie? And shutterbug?

    1. Yes, the buttons are unfortunate both in their quality and in their placement, but as you say, damn good-looking jacket. I think I may just go for it!

And yes, Dragon's Palate is a blog I co-write with my mom across the oceans, though if you're a follower over there you know we don't update it nearly often enough. We'd both like to be more present over there, but life gets in the way. Next year we have big plans for it though, so stay tuned! So, yes, sort of a foodie. And yes, a budding shuttterbug too :)

    1. Ha! I try on everything there as well. They are so strict in Madrid about their 6-item limit that it takes ages...

  8. Nice pics! The jacket *looks* perfect but if it isn't, fit-wise, I'd pass. Years ago, I would have taken it and made do. :\

    1. Agreed. After much mulling over, I'm passing. I'd rather hold out for true love :)

  9. I am also considering buying this coat - love the structured style. Thanks for the review, it really helps as there is no Zara shop in Seattle.

    1. Glad I could help. Sometimes it's hard to know without seeing these things in person. I myself am always wary of online shopping for that very reason. Especially because Zara always makes everything look so perfect in their photos.
